Milestone 7 (Draft Strategy) Now Completed

The Draft Canterbury Water Management Strategy is now available for public discussion and debate. A final document, taking account of this feedback, is due for publication in late October 2009.

The Ministers of Agriculture and Environment have been closely engaged throughout in the development of the strategy and have given their support to its general thrust.

The local authorities of Canterbury have also been closely involved and the strategy will also serve as a guiding document for ongoing collaboration between Ngāi Tahu and key decision-makers in Canterbury.

There are difficult and complex issues associated with the management of water and while this strategy has sought to address them, it hasn’t always been able to solve them. As a result intensive work is continuing.

What this draft strategy document does, however, is outline a direction and approach. It also paints sufficient detail to demonstrate how the goals of the strategy could be achieved.

To be successful it requires all parties to engage with it and to do this they need the opportunity to help shape and define it. This is the purpose of the next two months.

Milestone 6

This phase of the programme involved a major public consultation on the future management of Canterbury’s water. Everyone in Canterbury was encouraged to have their say on how they believed this precious resource should be managed.

A booklet (attached below) outlined a set of fundamental principles and four alternative options for how the region’s water could be managed. They were developed from scientific investigations and discussions with a wide range of stakeholders. Public feedback was sought before making a decision on the final option.

A long version of the discussion document (also attached below) has more information about:

  • The options for water management
  • How these options were arrived at
  • Ideas and information provided by stakeholders at workshops held around Canterbury in mid-late 2008 and early 2009.

How to Become Involved

Milestone 6 completed

The major public consultation on the future management of Canterbury’s water is now completed.

A total of 1034 submissions were made on the four alternative options for water management. A number of those were from organisations representing multiple individuals, therefore the number of submissions does not reflect the total number of individual interests covered by the submissions.

A report on the submissions is attached below.

Milestones 4-5

Last year feedback was sought from stakeholders and many members of the public. This information was used to build a picture of the wide range of uses and benefits of water that are important for Cantabrians. This is contained in a Consultation Report

The next phase involved another round of locality based stakeholder workshops to look at alternative options in preparation for drafting the strategy.

Letter to Stakeholders

Workshops are followed by an extensive public consultation on options for the future of Canterbury Water taking place in May 2009.
